Tonight was the night to turn our pumpkins into Jack-o-lanterns. The kids were totally excited. We had scored pumpkins awhile back from an old lady. We followed some simple rules that might be helpful to some in the future. Be sure to have camera ready or have an assistant at hand!
First: Draw your "face" on a paper so you know what it will look like. This helps prevent future fits if it doesn't look just right.
Second: Cut a hole in the top so one can see all the guts! Make sure the kids smell it and tell you what they think.
Logan?--that is pumpkin slime
Autumn?--that smells like apple juice?
Sicily?--ewe!! (See picture)
Third: Give each pumpkin kid a spoon so they can scoop out their own guts! This is mandatory for anyone wanting a Jack-o-lantern. If this rule isn't enforced the so called person in charge might be doing this all themselves.
This may take awhile but it is totally worth it
One may have to use their fingers and get pumpkin slime all over their hands. Just reassure them that their hands will come clean with warm soap and water! This is just part of the fun.
It might take 5 minutes or so to get all the guts out. Keep cheering them on. They are getting close.
As a last resort they might just put both hands in thinking it will help them get all the strings off the inside of the pumpkin. If not, their arms will be extra soft from the pumpkin scrub.
The youngest pumpkin carver will finally decide to take a turn because she "thinks it looks fun" and because you give her her own spoon! She might still think its gross but she is getting braver. Keep encouraging her and she will succeed!
Fourth: After the one in charge cuts out the faces, carefully place candles in and let them shine. The end results will get some ewes and ahhs but this will be for good reasons. You might even hear an awesome or too. But be careful they might want to carve more pumpkins.
Fifth: Step back, enjoy your creation, and take a picture. Now didn't you have fun? We sure did. Happy HallOOWEEN!!!

The pumpkins looked great! so glad Autumn is doing well. They all looked so cute as the consentrated so hard at carving.
